What Are Orthoses?

Orthoses are precision balanced medical devices worn in your shoes to allow your feet and lower extremities to function properly and help eliminate pain and deformity caused by improper function.  They are specifically designed to fit your feet and act to restore proper biomechanical function of the lower extremities.  Your doctor will select the best orthoses for your particular problem.

Why Do I Need Orthoses?

Although we often use over-the-counter prefabricated arch supports as an initial treatment for  biomechanical problems, many patients require more sophisticated treatment.  These are patients who benefit from orthoses.  The function of orthoses is much more than an arch support.  Orthoses realign the structures of the foot and leg to prevent bone misalignment as well as muscle, tendon, and ligament fatigue.  They are often used after surgery to help stop the recurrence of foot deformities.

How Long Will Orthoses Last?

We use only the highest quality and most durable materials so that orthoses from Sole FX last years longer than the average orthoses.  Although the life span of your orthoses will vary with the type of device and activity, most devices last from 3-5 years.  Some materials will last as long as 8 years.  Annual follow-up visits will help keep your orthoses functioning properly.

Is There A Guarantee?

Orthoses should be very comfortable when properly prescribed and produced.  In fact, you should be barely aware that you are wearing them.  It is our responsibility to make sure that your orthoses are comfortable and that they are providing the best biomechanical solution to your foot problem.  We cannot guarantee, of course, how your symptoms will respond, but we do offer a 90 day Comfort Guarantee.

What Is Involved in Producing Orthotics?

If you have ever had orthoses before, you will likely find that the evaluation process at Sole FX is much more involved than many.  A thorough evaluation is critical to give us all the information we need to provide the best orthoses for your feet.

  1. Prescription - In order to do Custom Functional Orthoses, it requires a prescription from your podiatrist, orthopedic physician, or other doctor.  If you do not presently have one, we would be happy to refer you to one of our trusted Allied Health Professionals.  No prescription is required to obtain an orthotic that doesn’t alter function of the foot, or what is called an accommodative orthotic.
  2. Foot and Gait Analysis – We do a thorough evaluation by collecting some history and current issues which may be affecting your condition.  Examining your feet and footwear is part of the process.  We will evaluate your gait, the way you walk, to help determine the best course of action.
  3. Casting – While your feet are held in the ideal position, plaster strips are placed around your feet.  The positioning of your feet is of utmost importance in order to ensure proper orthotic function and comfort.  We take the cast ourselves at Sole FX.  Alternatively, we may use a foam impression casting method utilizing a box filled with foam to capture the impression of your feet in the ideal position.
  4. Laboratory production – Your casts are kept in our own lab for production of your orthosis.  We produce most of our orthotics in our Sole FX lab.  You should expect your finished orthoses in as little as 5 business days, compared to 6 weeks in many places.  If an outside lab is used, it may be 7 to 10 business days.  We have prefabricated accommodative orthotics which may be used in the interim and a very low cost to give the patient some relief during the wait.

Can I Get Extra Pairs Of Orthotics?

You will be able to receive extra pairs at a 50% discount within the first year of purchasing the first pair.  After a year, it will be necessary to re-cast your feet and orthotics will be full price.  You will be given the molds of your feet.  Simply store them in a safe place and bring them in with you if you desire additional pairs of orthotics.

If you should want a specialized pair, or just an extra pair for convenience, it is easy to order additional devices.  Specialized orthoses may include:

Orthotic sandals

Dress shoe orthotics

Running shoe orthotics

Soccer shoe orthotics

Ski boot orthotics

Ice skate orthotics

Athletic orthotics

We always ensure that the first pair is comfortable and functioning properly before ordering additional pairs.  Keep in mind that since much of the work has already been done, additional pairs are much less expensive than the first pair.
